TDML Reduction

An important component to protecting our waterways is the determination of a total daily maximum load (TDML). The TDML is the amount of nitrogen that the system can accept and still meet water quality standards.

The 2011 Massachusetts Estuaries Project (MEP) measured nitrogen levels in the Bass River system at 338 kg/day, further studies clearly showed that this number is not sustainable for the health of the river.

In November 2016 the Mass DEP recommended Bass River’s TDML should be closer to 206 kg/day – thus necessitating a 47% reduction from current nitrogen levels. This same report also noted that Bass River is more susceptible to nitrogen enrichment than most other estuaries in the region due to its structure, size and rapid population growth.
