Hazardous Waste Disposal

There are some products and materials that are just too toxic to throw in our trash because they could harm you, your family, or the environment. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what you can safely throw away in the trash and what needs special handling. Luckily, there are lots of resources out there to help homeowners and small businesses figure it out. The Cape Cod Cooperative Extension lists the special hazardous waste disposal days for ALL Cape towns and answers on what you can and cannot throw in the trash and ways to increase recycling.

Prescription and non-prescription medications need special handling of their own. Unused, expired or unwanted medications can fall into the wrong hands and create dangers to children, pets and our waterways. Four Safe Steps Towards Proper Disposal outlines the proper way to dispose of medications. Residents of Yarmouth and Dennis can also bring any unwanted medications to their local police departments where special prescription drug drop boxes have been placed.

“Medications that are flushed down the toilet can and do find their way into our nation’s waterways every day. Those drugs are present in water that supports many species of fish and other wildlife.”
